Impeachment Trial To Begin

Today, the impeachment trial of Donald John Trump, President of the United States of America, begins on the Senate floor.  Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will first present the rules to manage how the trial will unfold.  These rules are nearly identitical to those used in the impeachment trial of then President William Jefferson Clinton.  Even Trump-hater, Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT), agrees with that!  So, the odds are that McConnell's set of rules will pass a Senate floor vote.  The rules will give House managers prosecuting President Trump 24 hours to present their case starting at 1pm Eastern on Wednesday.  This upsets Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), because it means that much of the 'evidence' will take place at night, unseen by most Americans.  Of course, the so-called 'evidence' consists entirely of hearsay and personal opinion.  There is no actual physical evidence, no 'smoking gun', that any crime was committed.

Under McConnell's rules, President Trump's defense team will also get 24 hours to present their case.  Then, senators will have 16 hours to submit written questions to either side, which will be read by the presiding judge, Chief Justice John Roberts.  If all goes according to McConnell's plan, this first phase of the impeachment trial will end sometime late Friday.  What follows that will be votes on various matters, such as hearing from 'live witnesses', already heard from during the House hearings, as well as calling for new witnesses.  There is also talk that McConnell will allow for a 'kill switch', a motion to dismiss the entire impeachment case.  Even if the presiding judge agrees to dismiss, the Senate will vote on a dismissal and could overturn any decision made by Chief Justice Roberts.

Mitch McConnell wants this whole mess to be wrapped up within 2 to 3 weeks.  The quicker the better.  Especially now as the latest Gallup Poll shows that public opinion has changed with 51% wanting President Trump acquitted.  Another sign that the purely artisan, political gambit by House Democrats has failed miserably.  Should the Senate vote to hear from new witnesses, an unlikely occuranace, the trial could drag on for months.  Issues like executive priviliege would be played out in federal courts before potential witnesses like John Bolton could be heard from.  The House should have done its job properly and resolved these issues during their hearings before voting to impeach President Trump and presenting articles of impeachment to the Senate.  But, they were lazy and driven more so by hate than substance.

Which brings up the reality of this whole affair.  House Democrats were not motivated by any sense of patriotism, nor preserving the Constitution, nor safeguarding national security or the democratic process.  This impeachment is merely a temper tantrum, carried out be foolish adults who still refuse to accept the 2016 election results. Keep in mind that nobody really knows what a witness like John Bolton is going to say?  He could very well back President Trump up.  In addition, make no mistake, if the door is opened on additional witnesses, then the Democrats may get more than they bargained for.  Likely witnesses whom the Republicans would want to hear from would be the whistleblower, Adam Schiff, Joe and Hunter Biden, and others.

House Democrats have over-reached on impeachment.  There is no evidence of "high crimes and misdemeanors".  The President, Premier and Foreign Minister of Ukraine could very well testify what they have been saying publicly, that they never felt any pressure from President Trump.  Ukraine got the money well before the deadline of September 30, 2019 without making any announcements about invetsigating Joe Biden or his son, Hunter.  Another potential witness, Alexandra Chalupa, could be exposed as having coordinated with former Ukrainian government offcials on helping the DNC and Hillary Clinton campaign during the 2016 elections.  They key elements of the House Democrat impeachment articles would then be completely unravelled.  In a just universe, this would translate in Democrats losing control of the House as Trump wins reelection and adds a couple of senators.  It would also show, once again, just as with the Russian collusion hoax, that the news media failed to be objective in the hyper-biased reporting.  House Democrats should have just voted to censure President Trump and avoided this whole mess.  But they didn't, and now comes the time to pay the piper!
