Trump Coronavirus Speech

President Donald Trump addressed the Coronavirus outbreak this evening during a press conference,  Trump began his speech assuring the nation that, so far, the Coronavirus is being contained in the United States.  Also known as COVID19, there are only 15 confirmed cases in the U.S., most of whom will be recovered within the next few days.  Of the 60 Americans who tested positive, 42 came from the Diamond Princess cruise liner, most of the rest from Wuhan, China.  Worldwide, there are over 81,000 cases with over 2,700 deaths, the vast majority from China.  Trump, flanked by relevant department and government agency heads, is confident that America is prepared to deal with the epidemic.

Trump has appointed Vice President Mike Pence to lead the White House Coronavirus Response Task Force.  As governor of Indiana, Pence had to deal with the first U.S. MERS virus case in 2014.  MERS and SARS are also Coronaviruses.  However, those two earlier outbreaks were associated with contact with infected animals, especially bats.  COVID19 also originated from bats, but is proving to be transmitted between humans like a typical respiratory disease, such as the common cold or flu.  Thus, Trump is echoing warnings from the CDC for people to exercise caution as with colds and flu.  To wash hands and cover mouth and nose when around people sneezing or coughing.  The CDC is also reminding Americans to be prepared, as one always should, with supplies of water and food in the event they must quarantine themselves for two weeks.

Thanks to early travel restrictions implemented by the Trump administration in mid-January, COVID19 has not become a serious problem within the United States.  But the CDC and NIH are concerned that while the disease may not spread much once the weather warms up, it might, MIGHT, resurface next Autumn and Winter, the time when colds and flu generally occur.  Between 25,000 to 69,000 people die from the flu each year.  In the past 10 years, the death toll from the various flu strains has been about 360,000 in the U.S..  A vaccine for COVID19 is coming.  Initial testing should start within 2 to 3 months with a larger test study in 6 to 8 months.  So, it may be 1.5 years before a vaccine will be available for the general population.

Meanwhile, the main message from President Trump is to not panic.  Nothing is inevitable.  America is considered the Number One country in the world to withstand a pandemic.  Fear mongers, like Nancy Pelosi and Chucky Schumer are trying to use the Coronavirus to smear Trump politically.  But Trump's initial response, to impose travel restrictions on China, have succeeded.  Critics at the time accused Trump of being racist, of starting a Yellow Peril, back in January.  But now, a month later, the decision has proven to have been the correct one.  Additional travel restrictions are on the table if needed as the Coronavirus has now spread to 39 nations.  However, other than China, there has yet to be a serious issue.
