NORAD Santa Tracker 2018

by Andrew Zarowny, 12/22/2018

Fire up the radars! Launch fighter escorts! Task the satellites! Its that time of the year again for NORAD Santa Tracker 2018! Children everywhere will be able to follow Santa Claus as he travels the world, delivering gifts to all of the good girls and boys. NORAD, the North American Aerospace Command, will be on duty again for this annual service. Don′t worry about partial government shutdowns, either! Aside from military personnel involved, this is an all volunteer duty, or more likely a privilege.

Yes, the website is up and running again, and has a new feature, too! This year, NORAD has added a FAQ page, complete with the most common questions asked by children. Answering the questions via video is none other than Old St. Nick, himself. Reindeer and elves also assist in providing answers. Santa′s Village at the North Pole, like NORAD, is a team effort!

The fun begins at midnight, Christmas Eve along the International Dateline along the Pacific Ocean. Santa visits many islands, then arrives at New Zealand and Australia. From there, he heads for Asia and all parts west. Santa wraps up his journey once again in the Pacific, delivering toys in Hawaii and Alaska before heading back to the North Pole for a big cup of hot cocoa.

You will be able to follow along, on the Internet, with email alerts, with social media like Facebook and Twitter, or even with text messaging. Just visit and sign up for emails or texts, or follow Santa on NORAD′s Twitter account. Things have changed quite a bit since 1955 when CONAD, the predecessor to NORAD, began the tradition, quite accidentally. A printing error in a newspaper to a Santa telephone hot-line by the Sears Roebuck company, directed calls to the CONAD headquarters in Colorado instead. The officer in charge, Air Force Colonel Harry Shoup did not panic and instead provided children callers with radar updates on Santa′s progress throughout Christmas Eve night. What a guy!

So have a Merry Christmas and be sure to follow St. Nick on the NORAD Santa Tracker, updated for 2018. Once again, just go to to be part of the fun!
