No New Impeachment Trial Witnesses

There will be no new impeachment trial witnesses.  Senators voted 51 to 49, blocking any additional  witnesses or documents. Mitt Romney and Susan Collins were the only defectors from party-line voting.  Despite Democrats wanting to add testimony from John Bolton and Nick Mulvaney, Mitch McConnell was able to muster enough votes among Republican senators to block any additions to the House managers case.  Such may well have extended the impeachment trial for several months, perhaps the rest of the year.  Preventing the U.S. Senate from doing any other work.  The Trump legal defense team argued that House managers have already presented testimony from 17 witnesses and over 28,000 documents provided by the Executive branch.  That any other 'evidence' should have been compiled by the House of Representatives before sending articles of impeachment to the Senate, as per the Constitution.

So, with any luck, this impeachment nonsense should come to an end on Wednesday.  A vote late yesterday of 53 to 47 approved the 'landing flight path' for the trial.  On Monday, starting at 10am Eastern, debate will begin, giving each senator 10 minutes to have their say on the floor of the Senate.  Tuesday will be a short session, due to the annual State of the Union Speech.  Then, sometime, probably late on Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. Senate will vote on whether or not to remove Donald John Trump from the office as President of the United States of America. The vote is expected to acquit Trump, possibly with several Democrats voting along with all Republicans.

Democrats and their allies in the Fake News Media are making the case that Republican senators are staging a cover-up, whitewashing the 'high crimes and misdemeanors' committed by President Trump.  On the flip side, Republicans and objective pundits claim that whatever Trump may have done does not rise to the level of an impeachable offense.  You don't hang a person for a petty theft.  You certainly don't throw a president out of office in an election year for doing his job as described in the Constitution.  Any policy disagreements should be decided by the American voters, not by government bureaucrats.

That is the basic essence of what has transpired.  Some overeager career wonks within the Deep State didn't like President Trump for various reasons.  They concocted this whole Ukraine business to derail the Trump administration and overturn the 2016 election results.  Their attempt failed, mainly because to was frivolous and partly due to the incompetence of House Democrat leadership. With all of their bluster and help from 95% of the news media, the anti-Trump forces failed in their mission.
