Las Vegas Shooting, 50 Dead, 406 Injured

WARNING, this is a breaking news situation, so information is changing rapidly, but here is what we know as of 9:30am Eastern. At approximately 10pm Sunday, Las Vegas time, a 64 year-old gunman, Stephen Paddock, opened fired upon a large crowd gathered at a country music concert. Paddock was perched from a room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel on ′The Strip′. Across the way was an open-air venue for a 3-day event known as the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival. Singer Jason Aldeen was just finishing his last song when Paddock began spraying the some 22,000 people tightly packed at the concert. The latest casualty figures from authorities at this time are at least 50 dead and some 406 injured, making the Las Vegas shooting the worst mass-shooting event in U.S. history.

Little is known about Stephen Paddock at this time, other than he is a resident of Mesquite, Nevada, a small retirement community of about 20,000 people. He had been living near Reno until several years ago. Police say that he may have checked into the Mandalay Bay Hotel on September 28. Several people were taken into custody, including a woman named Marilou Danley, who was later released by police after questioning. Paddock fired several hundred rounds into the crowd during a firing spree which lasted for at least some 10 minutes. He died in his hotel room after it was breached by police. Some reports say that he shot himself. Police found 8 to 10 weapons in the room, including at least one fully automatic rifle.

There is no indication at this time that Stephen Paddock was affiliated with any domestic or international terrorist organization. One eyewitness told a TV reporter that she was warned by a Hispanic man and woman about 45 minutes before the shooting that everyone was going to die at the concert. However, for the time being, police are treating this shooting as a ′lone gunman′ attack. Some news agencies say that Paddock has had previous interactions with law enforcement prior to last night′s shooting.

The Las Vegas shooting Sunday night now stands as the worst mass shooting event in U.S. history. Many of those injured are in critical condition as they receive treatment in local hospitals. Not all of those injured were wounded by gunfire, many suffered injuries due to being trampled upon during the panic which ensued. But, as it stands now, at least 50 people are known to have been killed with 406 injured. Police are still searching the hotel room and residence of the suspected shooter, Stephen Paddock.
