DUNKIRK, The 2017 Movie Opens Today

The summer-blockbuster for 2017, ″Dunkirk″, opens today. The movie by director Christopher Nolan promises to be an exciting recreation of the drama which took place along the shores of northeastern France. A large cast featuring some new faces to British cinema, like Fionn Whitehead, Aneurin Barnard and Barry Keoghan, is balanced with some seasoned talent, such as Kenneth Branagh. ″Dunkirk″ is a World War 2 film about the struggle to rescue over 400,000 British, French and Belgian forces surrounded by the German army in 1940. Following the invasion of France by the Nazis in May of 1940, German panzers tore through Allied defenses at Sedan, setting the stage for a blitzkrieg as panzer tanks and troops outflanked the Allies on their way to the French coast. What happened next is often called, ′The Miracle of Dunkirk′.

The ′miracle′ has several dimensions to it. First, possibly most importantly, was a decision made by Adolph Hitler to give his buddy, Hermann Goering a chance to destroy the Allies solely with air power. Ground forces were ordered to halt for several days, in what some refer to as the ′Sitzkrieg′. This error in military judgment, of which Hitler made many throughout WW2, bought time for what was to follow. An effort by the British to rescue trapped troops with Operation Dynamo.

That plan was to use the Royal Navy and whatever other boats and ships the English could muster to transport soldiers stuck on the beaches to England. Operation Dynamo was hoped to be able to rescue some 30,000 Allied troops from being killed or taken prisoner. But, thanks to the daring and dash of the Royal Navy, Air Force, and countless, volunteer civilians with private boats, some 330,000 were saved! A complete disaster was averted, allowing Britain and the remaining Allies to fight on.

″Dunkirk″ follows several characters during this ordeal. As the German Army is allowed to continue its advance, the city of Dunkirk becomes a ruined mess as fighting rages from street to street, to house to house. The characters wind up retreating to the beaches and wait for being rescued. Some do so with grit and courage, others show their darker nature in a desperate struggle to survive. Each passing second could be their last until they are safe ashore in England. Between the German Army closing in on the ground and German aircraft attacking from the sky above, the wide-open beaches of Dunkirk take on a claustrophobic, horrifying image. Even the English Channel is not a very safe place to be.

The 2017 movie ″Dunkirk″ by Christopher Nolan is epic in scale and packed with drama and action. Critics are already talking Oscar nominations as the film opens in theaters today. The WW2 movie is expected to do quite well at the box office. If you are looking for a realistic story with actual historic events, the summer blockbuster ″Dunkirk″ should satisfy your needs.
